Adopted Dogs
Breed: Spaniel Mix
Age: 11 years
Gender: Female (Spayed)
Hi, my name is Ginger. I am a beauty, aren't I? I weigh about 15 pounds and they call me a Spaniel Mix. I think part of that mix is dachshund because I am built long and low and I like to smell every smell when I go for walks. I answer to Ginger now but when AFH rescued me and my two puppies, we didn't have names. I came from a hoarder in West Virginia along with 26 other dogs which left me shy an axious out in public. Although I will bark at other dogs I see out in public. I get along fine with Coco, the poodle who is my foster brother, though. We like napping or walking side-by-side. Young children make me nervouse so I would do best in a home with adults only.
Let me describe my ideal forever home to you. There will be a loving someone who will be the center of my world. This person will rub my ears, pat my head and give me nice treats. I would love it if they were around all the time so I could sit in the same room with them but I like to hang out in "Ginger's house" and am fine if left on my own. I'm not exactly a lap dog but I like to sit close to my people so they have ample opportunity to pet me. It would be great if there was a big yard because I love to run. (If there was a neighborhood fox who would periodically lay out new paths for me to track, that would please me, too.) I can't say for sure but I don't think I would get along with a cat and I am afraid of children.
I am house-trained and crate-trained. I can walk on a leash and am learning basic commands like sit and stay. I am very shy at first but I am also very curious. I need people to be patient and let me come up to them. I find the adoption events stressful but have met nice people who gave me a little time to get used to them before they petted me. I really want to be loved but it is hard. If you could be patient, it only took me a few days to bond with my foster mommy, I could be a wonderful, loving companion. Would you like to be the center of my world?

Gravy is the cutest little thing. She has beautiful, wavy hair and a playful disposition. She is classified as a spaniel mix as her mom is a spaniel mix. We don’t know about her father. At 7 weeks, Gravy weighs in at about 2 pounds. Her mom, Ginger, is just 14 pounds so Gravy is likely to remain quite small. She is interested in everything and loves to explore. Gravy has had her first shots so she can be visited in our home. Please send in an application so you can be this sweetie’s forever home.

Breed: Spaniel Mix
Age: 8 years

Breed: Spaniel Mix
Age: 11 years
Gender: Male
Buddy is a love. Possibly the sweetest dog we have ever known. Buddy is the definition of a Velcro dog. He just wants to be near people be it to curl up and cuddle on the couch or sleep by your feet while you are working on the computer. Nothing phases this guy - Not our dogs, a trip to the vet, a ride in the car or strangers coming to the house. He is a little man weighing 16 pounds. Since we got Buddy last week he has become an outstanding leash walker! Buddy has not had an accident in the house in over a week. He really seems to be getting the hang of potty training. Our family considers him to be housebroken! Buddy is an absolute gem and who ever is lucky enough to choose him for their forever friend will be blessed with love for many years to come.
Breed: Chihuahua
Age: 13 years
Gender: Male
Willie is one of the 28 West Virginia dogs rescued from a hoarding situation. He is a male, pure Chihuahua, who may be blind (still checking and soon to be neutered.) Although his vision is questionable, he has learned to follow his nose, foster’s voice, and even using his toes to feel his way around. He can go up and down a few stairs, but always with supervision. He has even learned to jump up on a step stool, to reach his foster’s bed, where he will snuggle under the covers and fall asleep.
Because he is vision impaired, he is not recommended for young children. He does not seem to care about other dogs, large or small, nor cats. You must be cautious when walking around him, as he will follow closely behind, so you must learn to not step backwards without looking, as he is right there on you heals.
(We used to call a cat like that “Whoopsie”, as he has the potential to make people moving too quickly fall.) So, if you want a faithful companion, who will give you kisses, and worm his way into your heart and life, he is the one!
Breed: Terrier Mix
Age: 9 years
Gender: Female
Willow came from a hoarding situation in WV. She was the worst of the bunch as far as dirty matted fur goes. Here is her first "after" picture....after two baths and a lengthy session with a good pair of scissors. She will be going to the groomer's after she is seen by the vet and is up to date on her shots. By her behavior, it does not seem that she was ever outdoors. She is learning to become comfortable with the feel of the grass on her paws. She is working on house training and is not quite sure about all these toys and chew treats. She is getting used to lots of new things like possibly her first belly rub ever. She was very tense when we laid her on her back but once we started rubbing her belly, she got a "this is amazing" look on her face an promptly fell asleep. She is starting to realize that her life has changed forever. Willow is looking for a person or family who will love her, be patient with her as she explores her new world and help her learn all the joys of being a rescue pup.

Breed: Terrier Mix
Age: 9 years
Gender: Male
Cooper came from a hoarding situation. He had a rough starte but is finally becoming more playful and happy. I was so excited to see him wag his tail for the first time. He needed some time to adjust, but he seems to be enjoying his new life now. He has learned to walk on a leash and he is pretty much house broken, despite the bad weather is not making it easy. He is now available for adoption.

Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog / Australian Shepherd Mix
Age: 7 years
Gender: Male
Wyatt is as cool as his name. He is chill, content and loves PEOPLE. He is aware of the other dogs in the house and willing to interact but not overly excited by them. He is a nice beta dog. Happy to let others take the lead. He likes it outside but he seems to have taken to the dog bed after spending his whole live out there. He is happy to hang out with you, chew a stick and be loved! He would be a great only dog or a a good calm companion to a sister or brother. A real sweet dog!!

Breed: Maltese / Terrier Mix
Age: 20 years
Gender: Male (Neutered)
Wyatt is one of four siblings that were left at a shelter by a breeder. He is a Maltese Terrier Cross. He was very shy at first, but at adoption he came out of his shell. He walks well on his leash and was very friendly with everyone he met. He is not housebroken yet, but is crate trained.
![[Wyatt/Gizmo]](/images/2006-11-12-Gizmo.jpg)
Breed: Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie / Terrier Mix
Age: 17 years
Gender: Male
Wyatt/Gizmo is most likely a Sheltie/Terrier mix. He is looking for a new home because his current family does not have the time to care for him properly. Gizmo is housetrained, but still has accidents because of his age. He is wonderful with children and is very playful. He loves other dogs and really loves to play ball. Gizmo is just an all-around great dog. Come meet him and you will just fall in love.

Breed: Pit Bull Terrier Mix
Age: 16 years
Gender: Male (Neutered)
Hi Everyone! You might be wondering how to say my name - Mom says I came with it and I know it so well she didn't have the heart to change it. It's like this, Zay-dus. Mostly she just calls me Zay or Zay Zay or good boy or waggle butt. I sure do have a lot of names. I am housebroken, go to my crate on command (since there is ALWAYS a treat waiting for me) and I know lots of cool things like sit, down, high five, come, leave it, and wait. Mom and me work on these things a lot, she says it makes me a good boy, I don't think she knows I'm just in it for the treats. I do have doggy playmates at my foster home and we get along great. I love to wrestle and romp all day! There is also a little old lady dog that lives with me and I know to never mess with her because she is so small that I might hurt her on accident. However, it's sometimes hard for me to get introduced to a new dog since I tend to get anxious and growl at them. So Mom says I have to be introduced properly and slowly in a controlled environment. Some dogs I never get to meet, but others, once I get to know them in controlled situations we are best buddies (like my little puppy friend in the picture). If there is something else you want to know about me, just e-mail and ask my Mom, she will be happy to answer you or set something up so you can come meet me. Wags 'n Licks!
![[Xander]](/images/2005-5-12-xander.jpg)
Breed: Boxer
Age: 18 years
Gender: Male
This lucky little fellow was about to be dumped at the shelter before a nice AFH volunteer intervened. Xander is a pure-bred Boxer. He is fawn color and has a docked tail.
![[Xander]](/images/Xander2.jpg)
Breed: Shepherd / Labrador Retriever Mix
Age: 3 years
Gender: Male (Neutered)
Xander is a sweet, friendly boy who gets along with kids and other dogs. He was found wandering the roads in rural Mississippi with a horrible case of mange. The vet determined that he also had a broken leg at some point (but it doesn’t bother him a bit). He's all better now and looking for his forever home.
Breed: Labrador Retriever / Husky Mix
Age: 10 years
Gender: Male
Xander is a 1 1/2 year old neutered male Lab/Husky mix. He appears to have come from a very loving home and to have been spoiled. The owners had to give him up after unexpectedly having twins, and they were no longer able to give him the time and attention they thought he deserved. He is very handsome, sweet, and completely housebroken. He loves to be around his people, walks, dog parks, car rides, and playing. He doesn't get up on the furniture and sleeps on his dog bed. We're not sure how he is around cats since we don't have any, but know that he's great around other dogs.
![[Xena]](/images/2005-6-6-xena.jpg)
Breed: Hound Mix
Age: 18 years
Gender: Female
Hi my name is “Xena” the warrior hound! The vet says I am approximately a year old! I currently weigh 72 pounds and I am probably done growing other than filling out a little more! I am very submissive and love other dogs! I am working on crate training and how to walk on a leash. My foster mom saved me from a rural shelter where my time was up. I need a big fenced in backyard to run in since I am a hound that loves to run!
![[Xena]](/images/Xena2.jpg)
Breed: Rottweiler Mix
Age: 3 years
Gender: Female (Spayed)
Xena is a beautiful young Rottweiller who gave birth to ten puppies in a rural shelter on Easter. She is a sweet girl who is house trained, crate trained, and walks well on a leash. She looks rather fierce, but is actually a big marshmallow, looking for an available lap. Even though she weighs 75 pounds, she still thinks she is a lap dog. Xena gets along well with other dogs. She came to AFH fearful of many things (cars, TVs, brooms, and the vacuum cleaner) but she is adjusting well. She is a loyal dog who looks at you with those big brown eyes as if begging to be loved. Once she weans her puppies, Xena will be spayed and available for adoption around mid July.
