Ace (Henley)Ace (Henley) - (Male) - Katrina

Breed: Boxer / Pit Bull Terrier Mix
Age: 5 Years
History: Katrina Dog

Description: Ace was taken from New Orleans on our fourth trip. He is a very happy little dog. Update: Ace’s foster and the vet believe Ace is a Boxer/Pit mix. His foster family nicknamed him Henley. He has gotten a clean bill of health from the vet—no heartworm. The vet estimates that he is 8 or 9 months old. He is eating well and sits and waits for his food. He is housebroken, but has had a few accidents. Ace is young and still chewing stage. He also enjoys bringing his foster mom presents, like the bathroom rug, shoes, and couch pillows. He loves to play with his doggie buddies and has worked VERY hard at proving to them he is not interested in being Alpha, but he did so desperately want to be part of the pack, and PLEASE would they play with him. He also likes cats A LOT-- Barks at them, and wants to play. He is going into his crate willingly now, and he always gets a cookie when he goes inside. He will sleep quietly through the night. He is such a loving dog, he always tries to kiss you. He is not fond of the car, but once he is in, he goes to sleep. He knows sit and come now and has the desire to please.

Caine (Frankie) - AdoptedCaine (Frankie) - Adopted - (Male) - Katrina

Breed: Husky Mix
Age: 5 Years
History: Hurricane Katrina Victim

Description: Caine was rescued by a nice lady named Caroline who got caught up in the flood waters of Katrina. Caroline had 30 rescue cats that she owned. When Katrina hit, she took half of them to safety, not realizing she would not have time for the rest. When she returned to retreive the last of her cats (many of which were old and blind) it was too late. A wall of water hit Pearlington and she found herself fighting for her own life. Despite her own peril, she noticed a little pup also caught up in the flood waters. She managed to grab onto him and cling to a pine tree. As the water rose, she climbed the tree, clinging to it all night with the pup. Because he was her partner in the storm, she named him Caine. She also found Caine's sibling the next day and turned both pups into the Pontchartrain Humane Society. Hi. My name is Frankie and my brother’s name is Johnny. Not to sound conceited or anything, but we are adorable. Everyone who meets us wants to hold us and hug and kiss us. We draw a crowd wherever we go. I am named after some guy name Old Blue Eyes, because I have beautiful Husky eyes. We are only about 10 weeks old and have traveled a lot in that short time. We were pretty scared when that big storm hit our first home but thankfully I had my brother with me. We stuck together the whole time. Soon some nice people found us and drove us all the way to Virginia where we met our new mom and her big husky dog named Missus Kisses. We all live together now. When we first got here we were really thirsty and hungry. Now we have plenty of food and treats, but sometimes we still eat really fast because we are afraid of being hungry again. Johnny and I have lots of toys to play with but mostly we like to wrestle with each other. We chase and chase each other. It is fun, but sometimes he pulls my tail too hard and it hurts. But I usually get him back by yanking on his ears. Our new mom really loves us. She kisses us a lot and lets us sleep in her big soft bed. We are really glad that we were rescued from the storm. Thanks to everyone who helped us.

CharlieCharlie - (Male) - Katrina

Breed: Pit Bull Terrier Mix
Age: Years
History: Katrina Dog

Description: Hello! It is Charlie checking back in. I have now been with my foster family for about three months, and I must say I love it here! Not even the cold temperatures and snowfall have been able to stop me from wagging my tail, which is always in motion. I just finished getting healthy from the nasty heartworm, and I am now ready to begin the search for my forever home! So much has happened since I last wrote. While I am very sad my original family has not been able to find me, I could not have dreamt of ending up in a better place. I am always super excited to see my new foster mom and dad whenever they come home! I wag my tail nonstop, and feel I should kiss them until it is time for sleep again! They are also so wonderful because they gave me a bunch of toys. I don’t really care much about the squeaky or soft toys, but man do I love that nylabone, which is my most favorite thing to chew on. So far, it has kept me from finding out what the entertainment center or rug tastes like. Speaking of taste, I have finally put on some weight so the cold doesn’t bother me at all. I loooovvvvvvvvveeeeeeee to eat, and my foster parents say they have control what they feed me, or I would just eat the whole bag of food (which I tried a few times, but sadly they foiled my plan of living inside the food bag!). A close second in my world of loves is getting rubs! Oh, I wish I could just get rubs all day! Especially on my belly, that almost puts me to sleep every time! In an odd occurrence, the other day when I was getting magnificent scratches behind my ears, my leg started moving on its own! Man was that funny! Since I have been healthy, my foster parents have also allowed me to meet the other dog I have smelled this whole time. Boy, do I like him. We sniff each other, and I even gave him lots of kisses too!! However, I think he must be a little younger than I am, because he is always trying to play with me when I just want to chew on my bone. When I am in the mood though, I give him a run for his money! I am also careful never to bite him hard, or do anything that might injure my new friend. He is so cool! I have also been out for lots of walks in the neighborhood – I’ve met all sorts of people, big, little, you name it. I love them all. Check that, I love to kiss them all. I’ve been very good with even the littlest kids. I think kids in my forever home would be a great addition. My foster parents have been spending lots of time pulling on my tail and ears, and sticking their fingers in my food while I eat. I don’t mind this at all – it’s just more love for me! I still want to go to puppy school – I already know sit and shake. And I think when they tell me “down” they want me to lay on the floor, but sometimes I forget this because I am so excited to get rubs! I have also learned that when they tell me to “go to bed,” I should go into my crate and get a treat for being good! I am counting the days until I find my forever home. As much as I love my foster family, I know that they cannot keep me forever. I would love to be in your home soon!

Cole - Adoption PendingCole - Adoption Pending - (Male) - Katrina

Breed: Black Labrador Retriever Mix
Age: Years
History: Katrina Dog

Description: This poor dog was brought back from New Orleans on our fourth trip. This dog was limp and barely alive whe AFH arrived at the scene. AFH intervened when it was learned that they intended to euathanize him because he was so ill. By the end of his long drive home, he was significantly revived with fluids and food. He was wagging his tail and was very friendly when he was taken out of his crate to go to his new foster home. Update: Hi, I’m Cole, I was saved from New Orleans after a huge storm hit. I am not sure where my family went but I hope that they are ok. I am staying with my foster Mom and her dog Carman. I am sick and a little confused as to what is going on but my foster Mom keeps telling me that I am going to grow up to be a big strong boy. I do like to try and play a little with Carman but she is not really sure what to do with me. I think that she is afraid to hurt me since I am sick. My foster Mom says that I am house broken and that I am create trained (I really don’t like the create but I am really good to my foster mom). I love to be petted and I take lots of naps. My foster mom says that I will be much happier and playful in a week or two once I feel better and eat some more food.

GraceGrace - (Female) - Katrina

Breed: American Bulldog Mix
Age: Years
History: Katrina Dog

Description: Grace is a Bull Dog that was pulled out of the Winn Dixie staging area in New Orleans. She was so thin, you could see her spine and ribs. Many people passed her by because they thought she was a Pit Bill. Her foster mom calls her Gracie and says that she is as sweet as pie. She is not good with cats, nor is she housetrained; however, she is completely crate trained. She is currently being treated for heartworm and is extremely weak. Because of her condition, the vet wants her crated as much as possible. As a result, Gracie only gets out of her crate for potty breaks, to eat, and for short periods for her foster mom to pet her. She has gained some weight now and is starting to look more like her breed. Her foster mom says she gets in the crate with minimal effort and seems to under stand sit, stay, no, down (for jumping up) and come. She is a gentle giant.
